Before we were someone, there was only presence.
There was not yet a story to defend, a past to carry, an image to protect, or a future to conquer. There was only this simple and mysterious fact: being.
Then the names came.
The memories came.
The wounds, desires, comparisons, fears, and hopes came.
And little by little, what was only presence began to confuse itself with a person.
We call this life.
But perhaps life, as we usually see it, is also a kind of amnesia. Not a failure of ordinary memory, but a deeper forgetting: the forgetting that before any thought about ourselves, we already are.
The ego lives through statements:
“I am this,”
“I was that,”
“I need this,”
“I cannot lose that.”
But silent awareness does not need to assert itself. It simply remains. It was present when we were children, it is present now, and it will be present in the final moment of human experience.
The body has changed.
The mind has changed.
Beliefs have changed.
Pain has changed.
But something has remained, witnessing all these changes.
This something is not a thing.
It is not an idea.
It is not a religion.
It is not a spiritual belief.
It is the simple luminosity of being aware.
Perhaps awakening is not about acquiring a new spiritual identity. Perhaps it is exactly the opposite: gently releasing the need to be someone before God, before the world, and before ourselves.
This does not mean rejecting human life. The body feels, the mind suffers, the heart breaks, relationships challenge us. But all of this appears within a wider, silent, untouched presence.
When we forget this presence, the world seems absolute.
When we remember it, the world still appears, but it loses the power to define us completely.
So perhaps the path is simple, although not easy:
stop for a moment,
breathe,
look within,
and silently ask:
Before my name, what am I?
Before my story, what remains?
Before fear, who is here?
The answer does not come as a sentence.
It comes as peace.
And perhaps this peace is the memory of the Absolute touching, for a moment, our amnesia.
